The power of 1%: how small habits drive big change

When it comes to growth and development, we often look for the big moment. The major shift. The breakthrough idea.

Getting just 1% better every day can lead to being 37 times better by the end of the year. That’s the power of consistency. This idea, popularized by James Clear in Atomic Habits, shows how small, sustainable habits compound over time and lead to meaningful transformation. Habit formation really can make a big difference!

“All big things come from small beginnings. The seed of every habit is a single, tiny decision. But as that decision is repeated, a habit sprouts and grows stronger. Roots entrench themselves and branches grow. The task of breaking a bad habit is like uprooting a powerful oak within us. And the task of building a good habit is like cultivating a delicate flower one day at a time.” – James Clear, Atomic Habits

We asked a few members of the Talent Suite team to share one small habit that’s made a difference in how they lead, work, or live. If you have been wondering how to create a habit that leads to meaningful change or wanting inspiration on great habits to adopt to create healthy shifts in your life, these ideas below might help not only with increasing productivity at work but also with helping you take care of yourself along the way, too.

Melanie
“Something I have been working on in the last year is reducing the noise going on in my head that keeps me from focusing, problem solving at a high level and being present. As part of becoming a Positive Intelligence coach, I have integrated daily 60 second positive intelligence mindset reps into activities I already do when I wake up. I do the first set of PQ reps as I put on my slippers, the second set as I am brushing my teeth and the third set as I am making coffee. At first, I didn’t believe something so simple could have such a profound impact, but it has transformed my mindset. This practice puts me in the right place for the day, keeping me in the present, opening my mind to creativity, potential and preventing anxiety.”

Kelly
“Lately, I’ve been working on building small habits that help me show up as a more effective leader. One that’s really stuck? Before a big meeting or important conversation, I do two things:
First, I get clear on my intention: what’s the purpose, and what would a great outcome look like?
Second, I come up with one or two curiosity questions to help me stay open and avoid jumping to conclusions.”

Carrie
“One small habit I’ve incorporated is to review my inbox every Sunday afternoon/evening to ensure a smooth kick off to the week. I remind myself of where I left off the week before, any issues that may be looming and where I need to focus Monday morning.”

Katrina
“I spend a little time everyday reflecting on all of the blessings in my life I am grateful for. Having an attitude of gratitude helps me focus on the positive throughout the day as I navigate challenges, and reminds me of my purpose and meaning as I interact with others! Being appreciative of what I have helps me build more positive relationships with others in my life.”
